Zaragoza is the capital city of the autonomous region and former Kingdom of Aragon in Spain. It is situated on the River Ebro and its tributaries, the Huerva and Gállego, near the centre of the region, in a large valley with a great variety of landscapes, ranging from the spurs of the Pyrenees to the high, snow-capped peaks of El Moncayo in the Iberian mountains, to the extensive wheat-growing plains of Las Cinco Villas and the sober Monegros (black mountains) to the fertile valleys of the Gallego, the Jalon and the Jiloca.Zaragoza is a lively city with some 600,000 inhabitants. Attractions include a vast 17th-century basilica with eleven domes and dedicated to Spain's patron saint, the Virgin of the Pillar.
It also has the fortress Aljafería which was the original setting for Giuseppe Verdi's opera Il Throatier. It was originally a Moorish Palace with some parts dating back to the ninth century.Other fascinating places to visit are stately houses and magnificent palaces in the city. The most important Zaragoza museums are the Museum of Fine Arts, with paintings of early Aragonese artists and of El Greco, Ribera and Goya, and the Camon Aznar Museum, with paintings ranging from Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Velazquez and Goya to Renoir, Manet and Sorolla.Zaragoza is linked by Renfe's AVE high-speed rail service to Madrid and Tarragona (via Lérida) in Catalonia |
